Reagents

  • Chloride Reagent 1 (Code: 4504 - E)
  • Chloride Reagent 2 (Code: 4505 - H)
  • Phenolphthalein Reagent (Code: 2246 - E)
  • Sulphuric Acid Reagent (0.5 N.) (Code: 6090 - E)

Procedure

  • Fill the Test Tube (0778) with the water sample up to the 15 ml level.
  • Add one drop of Phenolphthalein Reagent (2246 - E) to the sample. If the solution remains colorless, proceed directly to step 3. If the sample turns red, add Sulphuric Acid (6090 - E) one drop at a time until the red color disappears. Then proceed to step 3.
  • Add three drops of Chloride Reagent No.1 (4504 - E) to the sample in the Test Tube. Cap the Test Tube and shake well to mix. This should result in a yellow color.
  • Fill the Titrator with Chloride Reagent No. 2 (4505 - H) up to the 'Zero' mark in the Test Tube Cap. Gradually add this reagent to the sample, drop by drop, while gently shaking. Continue until the yellow color permanently changes to pink/brown.
  • The result is obtained in parts per million (ppm) of Chloride by multiplying the Titrator reading by ten.

This procedure enables the measurement of chloride levels in the water sample, critical for industries where water quality and corrosive elements like chlorides need monitoring, especially in systems like boilers and cooling towers.
