Alkatreat: Alkalinity Adjustment for Boiler and Water Systems
URSA Associates provides Rochem Alkalinity Adjustment for Boiler and Water Systems, designed to regulate pH levels in cooling and service water. It effectively adjusts pH from acidic to slightly alkaline, which helps mitigate metallic corrosion.
Purpose
- For boilers: Provides hydroxide alkalinity to create a protective iron oxide coating, prevent certain corrosion types, aid sludge formation, and maintain silica in solution to prevent scaling.
- For cooling and service water: Adjusts pH from acidic to slightly alkaline, reducing metallic corrosion.
Advantages
- Ready-to-use liquid for convenience.
- Compatible with most treatment chemicals.
- No carbon dioxide release as with soda ash.
Feed Requirements
- Maintains phenolphthalein alkalinity in boiler water at 300 to 500 ppm as calcium carbonate, varying based on boiler operating pressure. Control parameters can be established by a Rochem Marine Representative.
Method of Feeding
- Can be intermittently fed to the boiler water line or continuously fed using a pump to the feed water line, deaerator, or boiler drum.
- Mixing in the phosphate-dispersive tank is an option. It's advised to avoid dissimilar materials in feed equipment and prefer steel valves over brass.
Storage & Handling
- Keep the container closed when not in use.
- Strong alkali content—caution to avoid contact with skin or clothing.
- In case of contact with eyes, rinse with large volumes of cold water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
- Standard precautions during handling—use goggles, face shields, rubber gloves, etc.
- Store indoors, avoiding freezing conditions.
